Otto Reinhold Jacobi (1812-1901)
Jacobi , born in Prussia, studied in Konigsburg, Berlin and Dusseldorf. In 1841 he was appointed court painter to the Grand Duke of Nassau. In 1860 he was commissioned to paint Shawinigan Falls as a gift to the Prince of Wales, making him one of the best trained and established artists to come to Canada in the nineteenth century. He made several trips to the United States and is where he eventually died, in Dakota, where his son lived. He travelled widely in Canada, the Rockies, Quebec, and Ontario, painting landscapes and his favourites, waterfalls and autumn scenery. These he treated with romantic and dramatic effect. He painted with solid structure and hard outlines as his German teachers. Later he developed a more atmospheric style.
